Iron Infusions in Tewantin
Tewantin Iron Infusions
Iron deficiency can affect many parts of the body and often develops gradually. Common effects can include fatigue, low energy, reduced exercise tolerance, poor concentration, and pale skin, often impacting daily life.
At Tewantin Medical Centre, our iron infusion services provide an effective way to restore healthy iron levels when oral supplements are not suitable or effective. We aim to make the process safe, comfortable, and as stress-free as possible.
Your GP will begin by assessing your medical history, recent blood test results, and overall health to confirm if an iron infusion is appropriate. If required, we’ll explain the procedure, outline potential side effects, and ensure you understand the benefits and risks before proceeding. The treatment is carried out in a controlled, clinical environment by experienced staff.
We work to coordinate your care efficiently, including liaising with pathology services for pre-infusion testing and arranging follow-up blood tests to monitor your iron levels. If your iron deficiency is linked to another condition, your doctor may recommend further investigations or referrals through our
women’s health or
Men's health services to ensure a complete and coordinated approach. To book, call

What Happens During an Iron Infusion
Before we book your iron infusion, your GP specialist will confirm your suitability for treatment by reviewing your medical history, current medications, and recent blood test results. They will explain the process in detail, including potential benefits and side effects. A small intravenous (IV) line is then inserted into a vein in your arm, and the iron solution is carefully prepared.
During the infusion, the iron is gradually delivered into your bloodstream via the IV line, allowing your body to absorb it directly and efficiently. Depending on the type of iron preparation, the process may take 15 minutes to an hour. You’ll remain seated comfortably in a relaxed setting, while a nurse or doctor monitors you closely for your safety and wellbeing.
After the infusion is complete, the IV line is removed, and you will be observed for a period of time to check for any immediate side effects. Most people can return to normal daily activities the same day, though mild effects such as headache, muscle aches, or nausea may occur. Your GP may schedule follow-up blood tests to monitor your iron levels and treatment response.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why might I need an iron infusion?
We provide iron infusions at our clinic for patients with iron deficiency who are unable to tolerate or adequately absorb oral iron, or who require more rapid replenishment of iron stores. Your GP specialist will assess your condition and determine whether an infusion is the most suitable option.
How should I prepare for an iron infusion?
Before your appointment, your doctor may recommend blood tests to confirm your iron levels and rule out other causes of symptoms. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up easily, and eat a light meal beforehand. You should also let your doctor know about any medications, allergies, or recent health changes.
Are there any side effects after an iron infusion?
Most people tolerate iron infusions well, but mild side effects such as headache, dizziness, or a metallic taste in the mouth can occur. Occasionally, swelling or discomfort at the injection site may develop. Serious reactions are rare, but you’ll be monitored during and after your infusion so any symptoms can be addressed immediately if needed.
How long does it take to feel better after an iron infusion?
Most people begin to notice an improvement in symptoms of fatigue within 1-2 weeks. The full benefit is usually felt over 3-6 weeks as iron stores are replenished and the body produces healthy red blood cells. Some people may feel mildly tired or achy for a day or two after the infusion, which should settle quickly.
How much does an iron infusion cost?
An iron infusion involves a dedicated appointment, nursing monitoring, medical supervision and the cost of the equipment . For this reason, there is a private fee of $220 for the infusion. Reduced fees are available for concession card holders. A Medicare rebate will apply for the doctor’s consultation time on the day, depending on the length of time and the nature of the assessment conducted by the GP specialist. Our team is happy to discuss fees and rebates with you at the time of booking.
My clinic doesn’t do iron infusions. Can I come to your practice for this?
We welcome referrals from other GP specialists and non-GP specialists and are pleased to support the broader medical community by providing timely access to this service.
